Treating the earth and its resources with respect is something we can all get behind. There is no reason why your wedding cannot be exquisite yet environmentally friendly. Here are a few suggestions to help you plan a green wedding.

  • For your save the date cards and invitations, ask for recycled paper or paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). FSC papers are certified to come from healthy well-managed forests.
  • Instead of short-lived flower arrangements, use living, potted plants. For the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Westminster Abbey was decorated with eight 20-foot potted trees that were planted later in a special location. You may not want potted trees to decorate your wedding because of the difficulty in moving them, but smaller potted plants and perennials might be a fine idea. Smaller potted plants can be used as table centerpieces as well.
  • Rather than living flowers that your bridesmaids carry, make those arrangements from quality artificial flowers. They are just as pretty, never droop, and maintain their vigor throughout the event.
  • For clarifying fine details and directions for attendees, consider having this information on a web site. Doing so you’ll avoid having to print all of this information for everyone. You may have to print some pieces, however, for those who do not have internet access.
  • Make your jewelry choices with the earth in mind. For instance, consider remounting a valuable gemstone from your mother or grandmother. Or, choose your wedding rings from an eco-friendly jeweler. There are a variety of jewelers who focus on earth-friendly, sustainable practices. Google “earth-friendly jewelry” and you’ll discover more than 2 million links.

These are just a few ideas for planning a wedding with sustainability in mind. Further considerations for a green wedding include the site, accommodations for guests, sources for catering, and efficient transportation to the event.
